Surprised you didn't ask Pan when you were talking to him yesterday. Didn't you use to collect shells for his grandmother for projects?
Me, I just paint directly on the shells, then seal them up with clear nail polish for that "wet look".
Which seemed like a good idea when I was in Jamaica & really drunk :-)
