What Do You Sing?

Learned something new this vacation. I sing to my children when they are really sick and need to be held and comforted. Guess I have been doing it for years and just forgot that I did it... until now. I had to sing in front of my hubby. I am aware that my voice sucks. But to my kids it is a comfort. While in the hotel room, I had to sing to Tot to get him to settle down. This is my version of "Hush Little Baby" that I sing:

Hush Little Baby, don't say a word
Momma's gonna buy you a mockingbird

If that mockingbird won't sing
Momma's gonna buy you a diamond ring

If that diamond ring turns brass
Momma's gonna buy you a looking glass

If that looking glass gets broke
Momma's gonna buy you a nanny goat

If that nanny goat won't pull
Momma's gonna buy you a cart and mule

If that cart and mule fall over
Momma's gonna buy you a dog name Rover

If that dog name Rover won't bark
Momma still loves you with all her heart.

So what do you sing to your children or self or animals?

Awww...

I sing my own customized version of Lullaby and Goodnight... my little guy sings or hums along sometimes. I love that!

Shut up now and go to sleep
Or Ogre's gonna eat your little feet...

Think that will work?

I don't sing to Brenna often but a the sure-fire-make-her-stop-crying-song in our house is "Molly Malone". You know, the one about the Dublin fish monger? Yep, calms her immediately.

"They´re coming to take me away,
Haha, they´re coming to take me away,
Ho ho, hee hee, ha ha,
To the funny farm
Where Life is Beautiful all the time
And I´ll be happy to see
Those Nice Young Men
In their Clean White Coats
And they´re coming to take me AWAY,
HA HAAAA"

I don't any more, but when they were younger, I sang the ABC's to them, in a lullabye voice, at bedtime.

Power ranger theme songs. But when he is feeling sweet he asks me to sing him Rockabye Baby, that, however, usually turns into me throwing him into the air or onto the bed at some point . . . not a good bedtime song!

You are my Sunshine! He's almost 16 and he'll still smile and hug me if I sing it. We used to sing it in the car on our way to preschool in the mornings. It's one of my all time favorite memories of him being little.

I like Ogre's rendition!

I sang the same song you sing when my kids were small... but I made up words after the 2nd verse. I couldn't remember what else I was supposed to bring, so I brought all sorts of animals and anything that rhymed. That damn song never ended.

And I sang Rock of Ages and Amazing Grace.

I don't sing to my sons... but I always sing to my daughter.

*in the tune of 'Are you sleeping'*

Where's my baby
Where's my baby

(insert her first name) (insert her second name)
(insert her first name) (insert her second name)

Where's my little baby
Where's my little (insert her first name)

She's my girl
She's my girl
******************

This always makes her stop crying or makes her smile. *Even over the phone.

No kids, no singing.

Just wanted to mention that my mom's slightly off-key singing is one of my favorite memories of her.

Don't worry about hitting the notes. Just sing to your kids.
