Any Bug Experts?

Tot found this bug and would not leave it.

I had to walk over and let him point it out to me, talk to me about and finally when I took a picture, he agreed to leave. He kept calling it a butterfly but I think it is something more like a wasp. Any ideas?

It's a "Polka-dot Wasp Moth". It is a moth that wants predators to think it is a wasp.

It's NOT a llama.

If you have Oleanders, these moths lay eggs on them and the orange, fuzzy caterpillars that come out eat the Oleander. Since the Oleander is poisonous and the orange caterpillars eat Oleander, they have no enemies that will eat them - so they denude an Oleander in a short time. I have to flick the caterpillars off mine into a bottle of water and drown them - ew. But I don't like to use bug spray since I have a lot of birds in my back yard. The moths are beautiful, but they don't sting. I can see why your son was fascinated with this - the colors are wonderful.
